The Porsche "Good to know"-App
The "Good to Know" app developed by Arvato received the "intermedia-globe Gold" award in 2014 at the WorldMediaFestival, one of the most important international competitions for communication media. The vehicle information app, awarded in the category "Web: Mobile Apps, Interactive Tools", goes far beyond traditional digital operating manuals, including search functions, elaborate video clips and interactive graphics, and is constantly being further developed.
“Good to Know” enables users to download information on virtually any Porsche model onto their iPhone or iPad. Porsche drivers can learn about the important features and highlights of their new model in a fast and modern way, without having to fight their way through a long owner’s manual.
Efficient use of the channel is a key concern, because as cars become increasingly complex, there are ever larger quantities of data to manage and distribute to the appropriate target groups. The app already covers eight Porsche series and 76 different manuals with a total of 25,000 pages and 33,000 pictures. These are complemented by approximately 2,000 HD video clips with a total playing time of 2,280 minutes. There is also a high level of internal cross-referencing, with more than 500,000 links among the media.
In addition to the German version, the app is also available in British and American English as well as Chinese. It was developed according to the technique of “single-source, multi-channel publishing,” with identical data containers serving as the technical foundation and ensuring the greatest possible flexibility. All of the content that was previously distributed in analog form had to be digitized and adapted to the new format so it can be downloaded anywhere in the world.
From the smartphone to the car
When the vehicle information app was completed, Porsche and Arvato SCM Solutions moved on to develop the next generation of the owner manual: with the market launch of the Porsche Panamera, all of the information became available as an online solution and accessible via the infotainment system of the vehicle in multiple languages. All of the content had to be adapted to the vehicle’s interactive features in order to facilitate intuitive searching for Porsche drivers. What this means in practice is that information is taken directly from the Porsche content-authoring system and then consolidated, edited and converted. Once the digitization process is completed, the data package is handed back over to Porsche for uploading to the vehicle during the next visit to the workshop.
It is becoming more important than ever for the automotive industry to be able to manage and distribute software functions and content based on target group and vehicle type. It will also be important to make sure that the ever-growing flood of data being produced can be evaluated and monetized. In this field, Arvato SCM Solutions is supporting major automakers with innovative concepts and powerful content-management solutions.
